CitySprouts will be making an important change to our summer youth program in 2018.
We will hold one 6-week session, replacing the two 4-week sessions we’ve run up until now. The dates of the summer program will be July 2 through August 10. It will be held at the same four Cambridge sites as in the past (VLUS, RAUC, CSUS and PAUS) and the same hours each day (9am to 1pm). The honorarium to youth for completing the program will increase to $150.
We are making this decision based on feedback from many youth and families over the years who have made clear that they felt a program of longer duration would allow more time for youth to really engage in the garden & community projects that are at the heart of our program. Our decision is backed up by research that shows that the impact of youth programs increases significantly with 100+ hours of program participation.
While this change to 6 weeks is likely to deepen the impact of kids participating, it will also mean that fewer youth can participate each summer. We are aiming to address this in several ways– with more robust after school clubs, expanding our Youth Leadership Team, and we are continuing to explore new ways that middle schoolers can benefit from the garden and CitySprouts during the school day, too. We welcome your thoughts and suggestions about this.
Applications for CitySprouts summer program will follow the same timeline as last year: available on our website now, applications due on May 4th, and decisions made and families notified by May 25th. Applications and location information for Boston are coming soon!
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us; we are committed to making this the best experience for as many youth as possible!
With warm regards,
The CitySprouts Team
