Growing for the Community
Gardens inspire hope and spark wonder and joy at the natural world. This year, CitySprouts’ gardens will also be supporting families in need of hunger relief.
With almost half of Cambridge public school students and over 80% of Boston public school students identified as low income, the struggle for food access in our communities is not an abstract one. We at CitySprouts are committed to supporting our community and ensuring that every child has access to hands-on science education, to fresh food, and to the tools they need to learn and grow into well-rounded citizens.
In partnership with Life Science Cares, CitySprouts has hired a part-time gardener to support the CitySprouts Operations Manager in using our gardens to produce food for families in need throughout the summer. They will be ramping up food production in CitySprouts’ school gardens this summer, growing tomatoes, squash, eggplant, and lettuce to distribute.
And fresh food is just the beginning. Our summer programs, rooted in science and hand on skill-building will continue online, providing a learning environment and support system for middle school youth throughout the summer. CitySprouts is committed to supporting the wellness and health of our community. We are thrilled by the numbers of new gardeners this year and hope that you have a good growing season alongside us.
