Mayor Michelle Wu Visits a CitySprouts Garden
This summer, we were honored to welcome Mayor Michelle Wu to the Higginson Lewis K-8 School in Roxbury, where the CitySprouts Green Team has been learning about and tending the vegetables, herbs, and flowers in the garden. Mayor Wu's visit was part of Connect, Learn, Explore: Boston's Commitment to Youth. CitySprouts represents the "Grow a Green Generation" commitment of the initiative that aims to connect kids with nature through growing plants.
The Boston Green Team gave the Mayor an exclusive tour of the garden and outdoor classroom. They shared their growing knowledge, enthusiasm and the expertise they’ve acquired over the three-week Science of Gardening program, highlighting their role as stewards of the garden and their experiences on field trips exploring the city’s environmental resources that help to inspire a Green Generation.

Mayor Wu spoke about Connect, Learn, Explore, noting that it represents “the very fundamentals of what a kid growing up in Boston should have access to.” She continued:
"I was shown around by these incredible young leaders to all the different raised garden beds, seeing the level of thought that goes into which plants can be planted together so they take care of each other and protect each other, how to take care of them, how to make sure that there's something that's going to come out of it to be able to make a salad or be consumed."
We are grateful that Mayor Wu took the time out of her busy schedule to visit, and appreciate her advocacy for our work with youth in school gardens. We hope she’ll come back for the harvest season!
